All About December’s Birthstone: Zircon

Zircon, the birthstone for the month of December, has been popularly used for almost 2000 years already. It is usually available in different colors because the heat and irradiation causes the gemstone to change its natural colors into blue or green. However, its most natural colors are yellow, red, and brown. There are also moments when in zircon can become colorless. With this, colorless zircon is sometimes used as a cheaper alternative for diamonds in jewelries.

Uses of Zircon

Since zircon is a common rock that is easily found in granitic rocks and gneiss, it is already considered as ubiquitous. This means that the supply of zircon is still abundant and there are still no signs that it will become a limited source. In addition, it can usually be mined from sediments in the beach or alluvial deposits. Besides the usual aesthetic uses of zircon such as in very stylish 925 silver zircon earrings, it is also very useful in other things.

With zircon being very stable at high temperatures, it can be used in the production of ceramics and pottery. In addition, zircon can be used in creating the components of fiber optics, dentures, and other dental products. It can also be used to create specialty steel, lamp filaments, as well as equipment for a computer and other electronic components.

Weaknesses of Zircon

Despite having the physical attributes of a very attractive gem, zircon does have some weaknesses to it. For instance, it cannot withstand exposure to radiation. When damaged by radiation, it loses its clarity and optical properties.

Furthermore, ultraviolent lamps in tanning and nail salons have been known to affect the color of zircon. This can cause its color to change. Fortunately, with the exposure to low wattage incandescent light, the color of the zircon can still be restored.
